Zero Keyframe challenge – The Cuphead Show

Technical Challenge – a complex rig animation without a single keyframe

This personal experiment focuses on procedural face rigs, linked properties, hair dynamics, randomness, and complex expressions.

Cala Maria’s floating head turned out to be the perfect subject for pushing those ideas further.
Most of the challenge came from managing tons of overlapping layers, building the rigs, and designing independent snakes that still react dynamically to the movement of the main head.

As the tests evolved, I kept pushing the automation further, to the point where the entire animation now runs without a single keyframe (keyframes are of the fundamental building block of animation).

Yes, you read that right.
The entire animation runs without a single keyframe!
